Twenty more drivers arrested for DUI on Big Island

The Big Island police department is continuing to crack down on drunk driving with DUI roadblocks and patrols, which netted 20 DUI arrests from Sept. 18 to Sept. 24, police said.

Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and two were under the age of 21. So far this year, there have been 966 DUI arrests compared with 918 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

Police on the Big Island also said there have been 1,536 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,849 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent.

So far this year, there have been 29 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 27 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.
