Preps: No. 7 Seabury Hall extends winning streak

The Maui News

WAILUKU — The Seabury Hall girls volleyball team rolled through its first five matches of the season without dropping a set. In the last two matches — against Moloka'i and Baldwin — the Spartans have dropped one set in each.

The bottom line, however, is a 7-0 record in the Maui Interscholastic League, leaving Seabury Hall in charge of the Division II regular-season standings.

Seabury Hall continued its unbeaten run with a 23-25, 25-11, 25-19, 25-17 win over Baldwin at the Bears' gym on last night in a match that lasted nearly two hours.

"I'm really thankful that Baldwin gave us that wake-up call in the first game,'' Seabury Hall coach Scottie Zucco said to The Maui News. "Especially after this weekend (with wins over St. Anthony and Moloka'i), the girls really put their heart and soul out on the court and I think we may have left a little bit out there. We all need everything that happens to us and I was really happy to see that we lost Game 1 and then we rebounded really well after that.''

Like her team, Yacine Meyer is not feeling 100 percent. She fought off the effects of the flu and entered Game 1 with her team trailing 8-4 – from that point on, the match took on a different feeling.

Meyer didn't leave the floor after entering the match, and finished with 16 kills, 37 digs and two aces.

"Yacine definitely makes a difference for us when she is out there,'' senior setter Anuhea Rilveria said after she recorded a team-high 20 assists, many of them to Meyer. "We have faith in whoever is out there, but Yacine makes a big difference for us.''

As has become a trend for the Spartans, twins Kaimi and Kaipo Rocha were right behind Meyer in the statistical analysis. Kaimi Rocha had 13 kills and 17 digs, while Kaipo Rocha had nine kills, 11 digs, two aces and two blocks.

Rilveria added seven digs, while fellow setter Keana Cramer, a sophomore, had 19 assists, four digs and an ace.

Still, it was the Bears (3-3) who put the Spartans in a hole right off the bat. Once Meyer entered the match, Seabury Hall went on a 4-0 run to tie the first game at 8-8 on a pair of aces by Alex Bolduc and a pair of kills by Kaipo Rocha.

"We definitely got a wake-up call in the first game,'' Rilveria said. "We are not really used to this environment, so we had to adjust to everything and I think we did good.''

Zucco had a clear message after the first game.

"Coach told us we just had to be warriors, pick it up, play like we practice and get it done in the game,'' Rilveria said.

The Baldwin loss clinched the MIL Division I regular-season title for No. 8 Kamehameha-Maui (7-0) and the state tournament berth that goes with it.

The Bears' losses have been to Kamehameha-Maui, Seabury Hall and Moloka'i, which have a combined 20-1 mark in the MIL.

"Seabury Hall is a tough team,'' Baldwin coach Kauila Houpo said. "They have a good shot at the D-II state title, I think. My girls are playing better and better every game as we try to get ready for the MIL tournament.''

After the first game was tied six times, Baldwin's Kathy Satele finally ended it with a kill.

The Spartans awoke in Game 2 after a 7-7 tie. Meyer took the serve with an 11-8 lead and proceeded to make the score 16-8 before netting a serve to give the ball back to the Bears. Rilveria took over, dominating with her serve one point later after a kill from the back row by Meyer. Rilveria rattled off seven straight points, and Meyer finished it moments later with another resounding kill down the line.

Game 3 was tied five times before Kaimi Rocha gave the Spartans a 14-13 lead with a solo block. The Seabury Hall lead grew to 18-14 and 21-16 before a Baldwin error ended it.

In Game 4, a Meyer kill started a 10-3 run that put Seabury Hall in front 17-10 and ended most of the drama.

Baldwin was led by Tupusa Satele's 18 kills and Liz Laskovics' 34 assists.
