Hayashi captures PGA pro event

Kevin Hayashi shot a 1-over 72 yesterday to capture the Aloha Section's PGA Professional Championship by three strokes at the Royal Ka'anapali Course.

Hayashi, who finished with a two-round total of 2-under 140, will be joined by Kirk Nelson (69—143) and Ron Castillo Jr. (73—145) at the 41st PGA Professional National Championship in June 2008.

Hayashi will take his three-shot lead into today's final round of the section's Stroke Play Championship, which is being run concurrently with the PGA Professional Championship.

Larry Stubblefield (75—148) leads the Seniors. AJ Molitor (90—176) leads the Super Seniors.


SURFING

IRONS, PATACCHIA OUSTED

Hawai'i surfers Bruce Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. were eliminated in the second round of the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday.

Nine heats of the second round were completed in 3- to 5-foot waves at Capbreton, France.

Brazil's Raoni Monteiro defeated Irons, 17.0-8.03; Australia's Josh Kerr defeated Patacchia, 18.34-10.23.

Fellow Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Pancho Sullivan advanced to the third round earlier in the week.

The contest is the seventh of 10 stops on the 2007 World Championship Tour.

BYUH LOSES TWO

Sarah Alderson scored the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute as Cal State-Monterey Bay turned back Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 3-2, yesterday in a non-conference women's match at Seaside, Calif.

Hailey McKee and Kahanu Ah Puck scored for the Seasiders (5-3-1), who lost for the first time in six matches despite outshooting the Otters, 21-12.

Elsewhere, Humboldt State scored in the 78th and 80th minutes to beat BYUH, 2-0, in a non-conference men's match at Arcata, Calif.

Doug Hansen made seven saves for the Seasiders (5-6).
