Radford holds off Mililani in sweep

By Kyle Sakamoto

The Radford girls volleyball team is at full strength and it made a statement last night against Mililani.

Marlena Malepeai had seven kills and Melanie Fa'aliga had three aces and three blocks as host Radford beat Mililani, 26-24, 25-23, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division match.

Fa'aliga, a 5-foot-9 senior, missed the Rams' previous three matches with a right ankle injury. It was middle blocker Bui Baravilala's second match back after missing five with the same injury. Baravilala, a 5-foot-6 junior, had two kills and four blocks last night.

"We finally had the full package for our team tonight," Radford coach Kahala Kabalis said. "We had all our top guns and we were ready to play."

Radford and Mililani both are 6-2 and tied for first in the West. Leilehua, which was idle last night, is 5-2.

Malepeai, a 5-7 senior, had only one hitting error and added two blocks.

"I just thank the passers, and the sets were good," she said.

Mililani took an 8-1 lead in the first game behind four consecutive aces by Mariah Choo. Radford battled back to tie it at 10, and eventually took an 18-14 advantage.

Two consecutive kills by Allie Elliazar gave the Trojans game point at 24-23, but a double block by Chelsea-Ann Villanueva and Fa'aliga tied it.

Fa'aliga then stepped behind the service line and drilled two aces to end it.

"I was shaking, but in a way I was excited," Fa'aliga said. "It was my first time back from being injured and it was great.

"It feels great; it was amazing. I was dying on the sidelines (while injured)."

In the second game, the Rams led 17-11, but the Trojans got within 23-21 after two consecutive Radford hitting errors. It was 24-23 before a mis-set by Mililani ended the match.

"All day I was psyched up for this game," Baravilala said. "I knew we were going to win. It felt good in my heart. When I went out there I pumped up everyone to play hard."

Mililani had zero service errors in the first game, but six in the second. It also had the ball drop between players on consecutive plays early in the second.

Candace Soares led Mililani with seven kills and Elliazar added six with only one hitting error.
