Baseball: Hirschbeck replaces Winters on ump crew

Associated Press

MILWAUKEE — John Hirschbeck replaced Mike Winters on the umpiring crew calling the San Diego Padres' final series beginning today in Milwaukee.

Winters was suspended for the rest of the season yesterday for using a profanity aimed at San Diego's Milton Bradley last weekend.

World Umpires Association spokesman Lamell McMorris said the WUA would not challenge the penalty handed down by Major League Baseball.

Bradley tore a knee ligament when Padres manager Bud Black spun him to the ground to keep him from going after the umpire during Sunday's 7-3 loss to Colorado in San Diego.

The crew, headed by Bruce Froemming, was assigned to the Padres-Brewers series long before the incident last week. Froemming, a 37-year veteran, is a Milwaukee native and retiring at the end of the season.

For today's game, Brian Runge was plate umpire, Hirschbeck at first, Froemming at second and Mark Wegner at third.
