USS Chosin, USS Chung-Hoon return from deployment

Advertiser Staff

The Pearl Harbor-based guided missile cruiser USS Chosin and guided missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon are scheduled to return tomorrow from a Western Pacific deployment as part of the USS Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group.

The ships departed Pearl Harbor on April 16 to join Expeditionary Strike Group Five and conducted operations in the Pacific and Central commands.

The expeditionary strike group consists of Amphibious Squadron 7, BHR, USS Chung-Hoon, USS Chosin, USS Denver, USS Rushmore, USS Milius, and 2,200 combat-ready Marines of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

The Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group operated in the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Operations and conducted Maritime Operations. U.S. and coalition forces conduct Maritime Operations to help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations.

USS Bonhomme Richard is an Amphibious Assault Ship. The primary mission of the ship is to embark, deploy and land elements of a Marine landing force in amphibious assault operations by helicopter, landing craft, amphibious vehicle or any combination of these means.

USS Chosin's commanding officer is Capt. Steven A. Lott, and USS Chung-Hoon's commanding officer is Cmdr. David A. Welch. USS Chosin has 340 crewmembers onboard, and USS Chung-Hoon has 300.

Guided missile destroyers operate in support of carrier strike groups, surface action groups, amphibious groups and replenishment groups and are multimission — anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-surface warfare surface — combatants.
