Service today in Ha'iku for Cherie Hurd, 13

A service will be held today for 13-year-old Cherie Hurd of Ha'iku, Maui, one of two girls who drowned Sunday while rafting in Lowrie Ditch on Maui.

The 11 a.m. service at Maliko Gulch in Ha'iku will be followed by a scattering of ashes.

The family requests flower petals only.

Hurd and 13-year-old Lucy Smith of Wailuku drowned while rafting in an area known as "Tubes" in Lowrie Ditch.

Cherie Elizabeth Hurd was born in Wailuku and was a sophomore at King Kekaulike High School.

She is survived by her father, Theodore L.T. Gomez; mother, Katherine Louise Hurd; brother, Tyger C. Hurd-Gomez; sister, Gracy B. Hurd-Gomez; and grandfather, Constantino P. Gomez.

Services for Smith were previously announced. Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and 9 a.m. Saturday at Ballard Family Mortuary, with a service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Valley Isle Memorial Park.

Smith is survived by her father, Ron; mother, Renee; brother, Ron; and sister, Clara.
