Sullivan best in French surf

Pancho Sullivan of Sunset Beach won the "Best Maneuver" award during the Fiat Expression Session of the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday.

The expression session took place in 3- to 5-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Sullivan received $5,000 for completing a series of precise carving moves on his wave.

The main heats of the Quiksilver Pro France did not run yesterday.

Sullivan and Kaua'i's Andy Irons are the only Hawai'i surfers remaining in the competition. The third round is expected to resume today or tomorrow.

UH'S WILDER HONORED

University of Hawai'i senior Chantelle Wilder was named Western Athletic Conference women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, following her victory at the Big Wave Invitational Saturday at Kāne'ohe Klipper.

Wilder captured her third individual title of the season, in as many meets. Her time of 14 minutes, 34 seconds at the 4-kilometer Big Wave beat Brigham Young's Cecily Lemmon by five seconds. The Cougars won the meet, sweeping second- through sixth place. The Rainbow Wahine finished third, behind San Diego State.

Wilder also won the Big Wave last year and has seven championships in her career.

UH makes its first Mainland trip this week, competing at the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational Saturday in Salem, Ore.

BYUH WOMEN WIN

Sophomore midfielder Ashley Hunter scored in the 59th minute as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated San Francisco State, 1-0, in a non-conference women's match at San Francisco.

Hunter scored her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Jill Haar, helping the Seasiders finish 4-1 on a nine-day road trip and improve their record to 6-3-1.

In other BYUH soccer news:

  • Jill Haar, a senior from Diamond Bar, Calif., was named Pacific West Conference Women's Player of the Week for Sept. 10-16 after scoring three goals in the second half to help the Seasiders beat Northwood (Texas), 6-1.

  • Brian Noguera, a senior midfielder from Provo, Utah, was named the PacWest's Men's Player of the Week for Sept. 3-9 after amassing four goals and four assists in four matches.
