OHA creates nonprofit LLC to run Waimea Valley

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has created a nonprofit, limited liability corporation to take over management of the 1,875-acre Waimea Valley in February when the National Audubon Society ceases operations, OHA officials announced today.

The new entity — named Hi'ilei Aloha — will be run by former Honolulu City Council chairman Gary Gill, who most recently had been program coordinator of the Kokua Kalihi Valley Community Health Clinic.

Hi'ilei Aloha means to carry, care for and nurture lovingly, OHA officials said today.

Audubon officials had estimated that Waimea Valley's operations will lose about $500,000 per year. So OHA administrator Clyde Namu'o said OHA trustees will be asked to fund $1 million for each of the next five years to keep the operation running and make needed improvements.

The 42 full- and part-time employees were notified of the changes this morning, Namu'o said, and will be asked to reapply for their jobs with Hi'ilei Aloha.
