Soccer: U.S. coach looks to reconcile with goalkeeper

Associated Press

SHANGHAI, China — U.S. women's soccer coach Greg Ryan is looking to patch things up with goalkeeper Hope Solo.

After the United States lost 4-0 to Brazil in a World Cup semifinal, Solo said Ryan's surprise move to keep her out in favor of Briana Scurry "was the wrong decision."

"Obviously there's always opportunities for reconciliation," Ryan said today. "This has only just happened. We'll work to try to get past this hurdle."

Solo, who had never faced Brazil, hadn't yielded a goal in almost 300 minutes in the tournament. But Scurry, who started for the 1999 World Cup winners got the call even though she hadn't played a full match in three months.

"It was the wrong decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that," Solo said after the game. "There's no doubt in my mind I would have made those saves. ... You have to live in the present. And you can't live by big names. You can't live in the past."

The loss ended a 51-game undefeated streak for the U.S. with all but one of those matches under Ryan. His move caught many by surprise and was viewed with skepticism. He said today he could live with his move, but suggested Solo had broken an unwritten team code by speaking out openly.

"Players have the right to say whatever they want to say," Ryan said. "You want to go out in front of everybody and stand together."

Ryan said he had not decided who will start in Sunday's third-place game against Norway.
