Haleiwa's Shipman in 10th at U.S. archery trials

Advertiser Staff

Haleiwa's Phyllis Shipman, who turned 64 last month, finished 10th on the first day of the First Nomination Shoot at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Conyers, Ga. Shipman's performance today was good enough for her to advance to tomorrow's second round.

Shipman returned to the sport in 1996 after retiring as Mililani Uka Elementary principal. She came up just short of qualifying for the 2004 Olympics. She would have been the oldest athlete on the U.S. team. Shipman was an archery All-American in 1964 and '65 at Pennsylvania College for Women.

Jennifer Nichols placed first in today's 70-meter round with a score of 1,290.

The top 16 men and top 16 women from the 70m shoot will be ranked 1 to 16 based on their order of finish for the round-robin series tomorrow and Sunday. The top-seeded archers shoot against the lower-seeded shooters in the opening round.

Each of the 32 athletes also earned a spot at the Second Nomination Shoot in April. This weekend's round-robin shoot will determine each individual shooter's ranking for the Second Nomination Shoot.
