CFB: Football notes and fun facts

By Bud Withers
The Seattle Times

Whose Heisman?

Double losses by both Louisville and Arkansas have dimmed the Heisman Trophy chances of Brian Brohm and Darren McFadden, respectively, throwing the race into a complete free-for-all.

Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon and Cal receiver/kick returner DeSean Jackson should get consideration if their teams keep winning.

The Rocky Mountain News' weekly straw poll of 10 voters this week listed Florida's Tim Tebow, McFadden and Kentucky's Andre Woodson on top.

Shhhhh!

Increasingly, some coaches and players are using federal health-privacy (HIPAA) laws to withhold information on injuries.

It's reached an extreme in the case of Texas Christian preseason All-American defensive end Tommy Blake, whom the school says will sit out the next two games with an undisclosed illness that has already forced him away from the team this season.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram quoted sources in August who said Blake spent nearly a week in a local hospital with the illness.

And what's more . . .

—Eddie Robinson, legendary Grambling State coach who died at 88 in the spring after a long battle with Alzheimer's, will be remembered in ceremonies Saturday in Dallas at the Grambling State-Prairie View A&M game. Robinson coached 57 years and won 408 games.

—Iowa State has gone from outhouse to penthouse and back again. It lost its first two to Kent State and Northern Iowa, upset rival Iowa and last week blew a 35-24 lead with five minutes to play and lost to Toledo 36-35.

—Louisville's past five touchdowns allowed from scrimmage have covered 57, 79, 42, 60 and 17 yards.

—Quarterbacks don't like seeing Louisiana State on the schedule. The Tigers' first four opponents have each changed QBs due to injuries or ineffectiveness during their games.

—Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamiltonsays he got 232 e-mails in the first 72 hours after a 59-20 Vols loss to Florida. He acknowledged most of them weren't very cheery toward coach Phil Fulmer.

—Despite being an Auburn grad, 2006 "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks isn't playing favorites in his state. He sang at halftime at Auburn on Sept. 15, and last week was on the Alabama sideline, rooting for the Tide against Georgia.

—Michigan has won nine in a row against Penn State, which Wolverines fans reinforced to the Nittanys last week. To the PSU chant "We ARE . . . Penn State," UM students responded, "We OWN . . . Penn State."
