Kaiser Permanente Hawaii said it will lay off 90 workers, or 2 percent of its 4,500 work force, as it realigns some of its operations to provider greater access to care and work more efficiently.

"We are not immune to the challenges in the healthcare industry today," said Janet Liang, president of the Hawai'i region for Kaiser, in a news statement.

"And we have been reviewing all aspects of our operations to ensure we are meeting our members' needs today and in the future."

"Our members expect us to respond to their requests in the care we provide, while staying affordable. In addition, our investments in technology have resulted in greater efficiency and less reliance on manual processes."

Kaiser said it has more than 100 positions open and that qualified staff may apply for the jobs.

It also is providing severance, medical benefits, personal case managers and outplacement counseling for the affected employees.

Kaiser said it is directing resources toward improvements such as expanding hours and hiring more primary-care doctors.
