Tennis: Federer pulls out of Japan Open

Associated Press

TOKYO — Roger Federer has pulled out of the Japan Open tennis tournament.

"I'm so disappointed that I have to withdraw from the Japan Open," Federer said in a statement released by organizers today. "I have not physically recovered 100 percent from the U.S. Open and Davis Cup."

Federer said that he was told by his doctor that in order to avoid the risk of serious injury he should not play in a tournament for at least 10 days.

Federer defeated Britain's Tim Henman 6-3, 6-3 in last year's Japan Open final.

Organizers have said that Spain's David Ferrer and France's Richard Gasquet have been added to the men's bracket.

American Venus Williams, currently playing in South Korea, has been added to the women's bracket for the tournament, which begins Monday.
