Sullivan advances, Irons eliminated in French surf

Advertiser Staff

Pancho Sullivan of Sunset Beach advanced to the fourth round, and Kaua'i's Andy Irons was upset in the third round of the Quiksilver Pro France men's surfing contest yesterday.

The third round was completed in inconsistent 4- to 6-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Sullivan defeated Brazil's Victor Ribas, 10.5-6.1.

"I got a 4.0 early in the heat and I really just felt that if I could chip away eventually I would maybe get a good one," Sullivan said. "I got one and was lucky to get a little barrel and get the score I needed to lead. It was a tough heat, one of those you just really have to keep your composure with."

Sullivan, who is currently ranked No. 8 in the world, is scheduled to face South Africa's Greg Emslie in the fourth round.

Irons, who is ranked No. 4, was eliminated by Australia's Luke Munro, 10.83-4.0.

Current world champion Kelly Slater of Florida also was upset yesterday. He was eliminated by Tahiti's Michel Bourez.
