The Burmese Community of Hawaii, the Hawaii Association of International Buddhists and Vipassana Hawai'i will hold a candlelight vigil and chanting for peace in honor of those hurt in the ongoing demonstrations in Burma (Myanmar). The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the 'ewa side of Magic Island.
Vigil organizers said that in the past several days, more than 150,000 Buddhist monks, nuns, and lay people have turned out in marches all over Burma, a display of peaceful power in numbers not seen since 1988. They are calling, among other demands, for an apology from the military rulers for the death of one monk and physical attacks on other monks participating in a peaceful protest in Burma earlier in the month.
