Baseball: Triple A team OK'd for Reno

Associated Press

RENO, Nev. — Reno's Triple-A baseball team officially has a home — and with little time to spare.

The county commission signed an agreement with the city yesterday to allow the proceeds of a countywide car-rental tax to be used for building a Triple A baseball stadium in downtown.

The ability to use the state-approved tax would have expired on Sunday.

SK Baseball managing partner Stuart Katzoff said site work likely will begin in December for the stadium, which will have room for up to 10,000 spectators for a first-game opener in April 2009.

In the rush to meet Sunday's deadline, the deeds for a series of land transactions to assemble the 8-acre stadium site at Evans Avenue and Second streets were recorded with the county on Thursday.

A building permit for the shell of the stadium was stamped on Tuesday and letters dated Tuesday and Wednesday from officials for the Pacific Coast League, the Minor League Baseball League and the commissioner's office of Major League Baseball were verified by PCL president Branch Rickey.
