A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the Mariana Islands at 12:08 p.m. local time, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck about 345 kilometers (214 miles) south- southeast of Guam at a depth of 10 kilometers, the agency said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

"A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawai'i," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in an e-mail, adding that earthquakes of this size may trigger local tsunami that can be destructive to coasts within 100 kilometers of the epicenter.
