The McKinley High School Foundation will honor alumna Maj. Ladda "Tammy" Duckworth at a tribute dinner Oct. 18 at the Coral Ballroom, Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Duckworth, a class of 1985 McKinley graduate, piloted a Black Hawk helicopter in the National Guard, which was shot down while on deployment in Iraq. She suffered serious injuries including the loss of both legs and the use of her right arm. Upon recovery, Duckworth went on to become director of Veteran Affairs for Illinois.

"We are pleased to have this opportunity to pay tribute to such a deserving individual," said Carl Takamura, president of the McKinley foundation, a nonprofit that offers scholarships for graduating seniors and enriches educational programs. "(She) is truly inspirational, exemplifying the values of the McKinley Code of Honor: honesty, industry, courage and love."

Proceeds will go toward scholarships for McKinley graduates. The foundation awarded 63 scholarships totaling $65,000 to the class of 2007.

Reservations deadline is Oct. 12. Contributions exceeding $50 per seat will be tax-deductible.
