Kaimuki remains top dog in White

By Stacy Kaneshiro

Running back Justin Paderes rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns, and Christopher Etuale put on a special performance to help Kaimuki run over Roosevelt, 34-13, last night to keep sole possession of first place in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference.

The Bulldogs (5-1 overall, 5-0 White) watched the Rough Riders (4-2, 4-2) pull to within 19-13 late in the third quarter following the second TD pass of the game from quarterback Lowen Kahooilihala.

But Etuale's 79-yard return on the ensuing kickoff to the Roosevelt 12 sucked the wind out of the host Rough Riders' sails on an already listless night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. It set up Paderes' second TD of the game, and Paderes' 2-point conversion run opened the Bulldogs' lead to 27-13.

Later, Etuale's 38-yard punt return to the Roosevelt 40 set up Kaimuki's final TD of the night to make it 34-13.

"It changed the momentum of the game again," Bulldogs coach Darren Johnson said of Etuale's returns. "He's done that all year for us, where he gets us long returns."

"My kick-return coach said just follow my lanes, look for my blocks," Etuale said. "I was supposed to run to the middle, but I saw an open lane and took it."

It wasn't just Etuale who spoiled Roosevelt's 75th homecoming. The Bulldogs dominated the pits behind Paderes' running. He had 113 yards by halftime, but had his back-breaking runs in the second half, including a 36-yard gallop.

"Physically, they just beat us up," Roosevelt coach Lester Parrilla said. "The big boys just ran us over tonight."

The Bulldogs' offensive line of center Dustin Uyeda, guards Robert Pologa and Alex Foster-Laifa, and tackles Chauncy Nicola and Albert Iokepa smashed holes inside and out to help the 5-foot-5, 150-pound Paderes scoot free.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs' defense also did its job, limiting Roosevelt's power-running tailback Ranson Tuitama to just 64 yards on 13 carries.
