Baseball: Cabrera back in Detroit lineup

Associated Press

DETROIT — Miguel Cabrera was in the Detroit Tigers' lineup as the designated hitter against the Chicago White Sox today, one day after missing a 4-1 loss to Kansas City because of left quadriceps soreness.

Gary Sheffield was out of the lineup after tearing a tendon near the top of one of his fingers sliding headfirst into second trying to stretch a single yesterday. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Sheffield should be able to play when the swelling on his finger subsides.

"That's not supposed to be something that affects him gripping the bat," Leyland said.

Leyland said Sheffield will wear a splint when he's not playing for six weeks and wear another kind of padding when he plays.

Brandon Inge was again at third base in place of Cabrera, obtained from Florida during the offseason with Dontrelle Willis.
