Three from Hawaii will compete in boarding event

Hale'iwa's John John Florence, Chris Kays of Honolulu and Maui's Chris Senn are scheduled to compete in the first-ever ultimate boarder competition.

The event, which will be April 13 to 19 at various locations in California, will feature competitors going head to head in three board sports: snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing.

First place in the contest will pay $30,000.

DISCUS CHALLENGE ON MAUI, MAY 13 TO 16

The Maui International Discus Challenge is set for May 13 to 16 at Memorial Stadium Complex in Wailuku.

A dozen athletes representing seven different countries are expected to compete in the event.

Gerd Kanter of Estonia, the reigning IAAF men's discus world champion, and past IAAF women's discus world champion Beatrice Faumuina of New Zealand will join five former U.S. Olympians and other elite discus throwers in the competition.

RODEO

MISS HAWAI'I RODEO CONTESTANTS SOUGHT

The Hawai'i Women's Rodeo Association is seeking female contestants between the ages of 19 to 26 to compete in the Miss Rodeo Hawai'i.

The contest will be June 22. Application deadlines are May 31.

The winner of the Hawai'i event will advance to the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in Las Vegas in December.

Candidates must possess riding ability, knowledge of professional rodeo competitions and have great moral character.
