Hoping to pick up where they left off some 20 miles south from Stanford, Hawai'i resumes Western Athletic Conference action starting tonight in a four-game series at San Jose State.

Game time is 3 p.m., HST, today at Municipal Stadium.

Tomorrow's doubleheader and Sunday's series finale both start at 10 a.m., HST.

After inconsistent play the first 28 games, the Rainbows (10-19 overall, 2-6 WAC) not only ended a six-game losing streak with their win against No. 13 Stanford Tuesday, they started the second half of their season 1-0.

"That's exactly what I told the team," UH coach Mike Trapasso said.

Despite being tied for last in the WAC, UH is just 3 1/2 games back. With 24 conference games left, there is ample time to make up ground, starting today.

The Spartans (14-10, 5-6) started WAC play strong, taking 3 of 4 from Sacramento State. But SJSU is coming off a road trip in which it went 1-3 at New Mexico State and 1-2 at Louisiana Tech (one game was canceled because of rain; it will not be made up, according to SJSU).

Trapasso said Jared Alexander (3-3, 2.01), the only consistent starter this season, will start tonight. For tomorrow's doubleheader, Trapasso tentatively has Josh Slaats (0-3, 3.76) in the opener and Nick (At Night) Rhodes in the second game. Rhodes, usually the game 2 starter in a series, is being pushed back because Trapasso prefers to have him pitch at night.

Trapasso is considering starting Alex Capaul, who had a nice five-inning relief stint last weekend at Sacramento State, on Sunday. Trapasso said the order is tentative because he wants to use tonight's game to make an assessment for the rest of the series.

The Spartans will be starting left-handers in the first two games in David Berner (0-5, 5.54) and Max Peterson (2-2, 4.44). They have not decided on the remaining starters.

Against Stanford, the first two batters in the order, Sean Montplaisir and Derek DuPree, were left-handed. Each went 2 for 4.

"We're going to be facing left-handed pitching the first two games," Trapasso said. "I think I'm going to do that anyway and see how they do because I just like the more execution-type lineup with those guys at the top of the order."

After leading off all season, Jon Hee will bat third as he did at Stanford, where he went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. He leads the team with four multiple-RBI games.
