UH tops San Jose State in game one of twinbill, 12-5

Jeff Van Doornum and Brandon Haislet combined to drive in five runs to help Hawai'i beat San Jose State, 12-5, today in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

With the win, the Rainbows have secured at least a split of the four-game series.

Van Doornum was 3 for 4 with two RBI-doubles and a sacrifice fly, while Haislet was 2 for 5 with a double.

Corey Kahn (1-0) allowed a run on five hits in 4 1/3 innings of relief of starter Jsoh Slaats, who went 3 1/3 innings, giving up four runs. Cameron Wheeler pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the Rainbows (12-19 overall, 4-6 WAC).

Max Peterson (2-3) gave up six runs (four earned) in three innings for the Spartans (14-12, 5-8).

The Rainbows had a 7-0 lead before the Spartans chased Slaats with a four-run fourth to pull to within three. But the Rainbows continued to hit against SJSU reliever Luke Mazzanti, scoring six more the rest of the way.

Jon Hee and Derek DuPree paced UH's 18-hit attack with a combined eight hits. Hee was 4 for 5 and DuPree was 4 for 6.
