BALI ARTS FESTIVAL

Where's the beef? On the Big Island, where more than 30 top Island chefs will transform various and unusual cuts of forage-fed beef into mouth-watering dishes for attendees: think hearty salad of beef heart, hearts of palm and hearts of romaine in the 13th annual Mealani's A Taste of the Hawaiian Range. Delicious local produce and tasty samples round out the event (mountain oysters, anyone?).

Taste is presented by University of Hawai'i-Manoa's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources in partnership with the Big Island Farm Bureau and the Hawaii Cattlemen's Association. 6-8 p.m. Oct. 3 at Hilton Waikoloa Village. Tickets: $35. 808-981-8285; www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/taste.

TROOPING THE COLOUR

At Britain's best-known annual display of pomp and ceremony, Massed Bands and Troops of the Foot Guards and Household Cavalry take over Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's birthday.

Crowds line the flag-filled Mall to goggle at cavalry divisions on perfectly-groomed steeds parading around St. James' Park in central London to salute the queen. The tradition dates back to 1748 and since Edward VII's reign the sovereign has taken the salute in person. Returning to Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth appears on the balcony to watch Britain's Royal Air force fly past as the guns salute her from the Tower of London.
