Kauai man in guarded condition after car crash

HANALEI, Kauai – A 40-year-old Anahola man remains in guarded condition at The Queen's Medical Center on Oahu today with injuries from a one-vehicle crash in Hanalei early Saturday morning, Kauai police reported this morning.

William Gonsalves was eastbound on Kuhio Highway near the Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant about 1:17 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle crossed the centerline, ran off the road and hit a state Department of Transportation road closure gate and a guy wire supporting a utility pole.

About 430 Hanalei-area customers of the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative lost power until 4 a.m. Saturday, spokeswoman Anne Barnes said.

When police, fire and ambulance personnel arrived, Gonsalves was unconscious, Kauai spokeswoman Mary Daubert said. He was taken to Wilcox Hospital for treatment and later flown to Queen's for further treatment.

The Kuhio Highway was closed for about three-and-a-half hours after the accident.
