Tennis: Davenport wins opener at Amelia Island

Associated Press

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. — Lindsay Davenport began her quest for a fourth Bausch & Lomb Championships title with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Vania King today, overcoming a lack of sleep caused by her 9-month-old son's nagging cold.

"To be honest, it felt a little awkward," Davenport said. "Every day and every match that I can play on clay, I know I will keep getting better and better. So (I am) happy to start off on the right foot, but eager to try to improve."

No. 8 Agnes Szavay, No. 13 Virginie Razzano and No. 15 Anabel Medina Garrigues won second-round matches today. No. 12 Katarina Srebotnik and No. 14 Victoria Azarenka were first-round winners.

Davenport won the title in 1997, 2004 and 2005, the last time as No. 1 in the world, and was runner-up in 2003. She missed the event in 2006 because of a back injury and last year to have her first child.

"Definitely, it's not my strong suit playing on (clay), but I like playing this tournament a lot," said Davenport, who had seven aces and faced only two break points. "I like that court a lot. I was able to serve really well, so that obviously helped.

"I've got to try and play a hard-court game on this court," Davenport said. "It's worked for me in the past. But the important thing for me to remember is every day and every match that I get under my belt, I improve immensely."

Davenport's son, Jagger, has interrupted her sleep the last few nights.

"My son's been sick now for like four days," Davenport said. "So he's been having a tough time. When you get less sleep, you kind of get more homesick. I just keep telling him, `A couple more days, a couple more weeks."'

Davenport will face Jill Craybas in the second round tomorrow at Amelia Island Plantation.
