Police identify pedestrian killed in Monday incident

KAHULUI, Maui — Police identified a pedestrian killed Monday night while crossing Pu'unene Avenue as Franklin G. Boughner, 39.

The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. when a southbound 2003 Mazda pickup truck hit Boughner about 184 feet south of the Kamehameha Avenue intersection, police said. The victim was not in a crosswalk and investigators suspect he had been drinking alcohol, police said.

Boughner was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died.

The 31-year-old Kahului man driving the truck and his passenger, a 13-year-old boy, were not injured.

There have been seven traffic fatalities in Maui County so far this year, compared with four at this time last year.
