NEW YORK — Carlos Delgado and the New York Mets botched the final Shea Stadium opener the same way they squandered that big lead in the NL East last year.

April or September, it doesn't matter. The Mets can't find a way to hold off Philadelphia.

Jamie Moyer (1-0) gave up two runs on four hits over six innings, Jayson Werth hit a tiebreaking single to cap a three-run seventh and the Phillies rallied past New York, 5-2, yesterday with the help of Delgado's error in the seventh.

"Definitely not the start we wanted to get off to," Mets star David Wright said.

It was another late comeback by Philadelphia, which beat the Mets in their final eight meetings last year and won the season series 12-6.

Make it nine in a row now.

Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, Jimmy Rollins and Maui native Shane Victorino singled with one out before Chase Utley was hit by a pitch for the third time. Ryan Howard then hit a grounder to Delgado at first base. Delgado tried for a double play, but his throw to second deflected off Utley and rolled toward center field for an error that allowed the tying run to score.

Cardinals 5, Astros 3: Troy Glaus hit a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning to break a 3-all tie, Anthony Reyes (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings of one-hit ball, and Jason Isringhausen worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save to propel St. Louis.

Rockies 4, Braves 3: Ubaldo Jimenez (1-1) allowed six hits and three runs in a six innings, and Matt Holliday hit two run-scoring singles to lift host Colorado over hard-luck Atlanta, which has lost all five games this season by one run.

Brewers 3, Reds 2: Rickie Weeks singled home J.J. Hardy from third with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Milwaukee over Cincinnati, which tied the game in the ninth on Corey Patterson two-out solo homer off Eric Gagne.

Giants 3, Padres 2: Bengie Molina hit his second homer of the game with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning off Cla Meredith, lifting San Francisco over San Diego.

Diamondbacks 10, Dodgers 5: Doug Davis (1-1), pitching two days before his scheduled surgery for thyroid cancer, allowed two runs in six innings and Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer to lead host Arizona over Los Angeles.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

RED SOX 5, TIGERS 0: Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-0) allowed four hits in 6 2/3 innings and Kevin Youkilis had three hits and two RBIs as Boston returned from its three-country trip of nearly 16,000 miles to keep Detroit winless after seven games.

Orioles 8, Rangers 1: Scott Moore led off the second with a homer, and Luke Scott followed an inning later with a two-run shot as Baltimore ruined Texas' home opener by winning its sixth straight to improve to 6-1, best in the American League.

Athletics 9, Blue Jays 8: Baldwin High alum Kurt Suzuki singled up the middle off right-hander Jeremy Accardo (0-1) with two outs in the top of the ninth and Ryan Sweeney then tripled to right to break an 8-all tie as Oakland ended Toronto's three-game winning streak.

Royals 5, Yankees 2: Brian Bannister (2-0) allowed two runs and five hits in five innings, Ross Gload drove in two runs and Kansas City won its home opener by beating New York and Alex Rodriguez, who struck out four times for only the fourth time in his career.

Mariners 6, Rays 5: Erik Bedard (1-0) allowed five runs and five hits through six innings, Richie Sexson drove in three runs and Brad Wilkerson had a two-run single as Seattle ruined Tampa Bay's home opener.

Indians 4, Angels 3: Travis Hafner hit a two-run homer off Justin Speier with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, and Jake Westbrook earned his first complete game since 2006 to lead Cleveland over Los Angeles.
