Fire quickly extinguished aboard Coast Guard boat

Advertiser Staff

No one was injured and there was virtually no damage to the 110-foot Coast Guard patrol boat "Galveston Harbor" following a small fire in the boat's engine room this morning.

Multiple firefighter crews, the fireboat and a rescue team were sent to the Coast Guard station on Sand Island about 7:45 a.m. after a fire was reported aboard the vessel which was tied up at one of the station's piers.

The fire was reported to be extinguished while the fire crews were en route to the scene.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Chad Saylor said the fire involved batteries in the boat's engine room.

"There was no further damage — other than to the batteries," Saylor said.
