HILO, Hawai'i — A 60-year-old Hilo man died today from injuries he suffered in a one-vehicle crash on Mamalahoa Highway near the 22-mile marker near Pu'uanahulu.

Police who were called to the scene at 8:53 a.m. determined that the motorist was driving a 2008 Pontiac four-door sedan south on Mamalahoa when he lost control, ran off the road and struck a utility pole.

The man was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died at 10:27 a.m.

Police believe speed was a contributing factor in the crash. The name of the motorist is being withheld pending positive identification, police said.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The death is the 12th fatality on Big Island roads this year compared with 12 at this time last year.
