Showcase celebrates history of Hawaii art

Art on the Block, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 19 on the Fasi Civic Center grounds surrounding the Skygate sculpture, will showcase an array of Island art reflecting Hawai'i's artistic heritage.

The event is part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the city Commission on Culture and the Arts. The first-time showing is being coordinated by the Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts. Diverse forms of art will be showcased.

Art on view will include Michael Lee's hand-painted dishes of Hawaiian flowers; John Johnson's underwater photography; Jim Brorbaugh's acrylic and watercolor paintings; June Yoshinaga's origami framed art; James Kojiro's 'ukulele; Kyle Ino and his hand-made fused-glass jewelry; drawings and paintings from Moana Meyer; and much more.

Art on the Block also will offer performances by "American Idol" finalist Jasmine Trias, singer-actress Kristian Lei, Chum Sa rung Rainbow & Tuhoolim Korean Traditional Drumming, Gee Yung International Martial Arts Dragon & Lion Dance and others.

BOOKS, MUSIC GET THEIR KUDOS, TOO

The third Hawai'i Book & Music Festival, a free event celebrating books, reading, storytelling and music, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 and 18 at the Fasi Civic Center grounds.

A wide range of local, national and international authors, entertainers and storytellers will assemble in the benefit for Hawai'i Literacy and Read To Me International.

Activities will unfold in 12 venues, with music, author signings, poetry slams, dramatic readings, plays and Hawaiian-culture presentations.

Exhibitor booths will offer books and music, with vendors providing snacks. Offerings for children include a keiki stage, play area and rides.
