Pearl City clinches OIA Red West crown

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Pearl City baseball team pulled off a nice balancing act on offense yesterday against 'Aiea.

Pearl City drew 10 walks and had 11 hits in a 13-4 victory over host 'Aiea that clinched the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West title with two games remaining.

The Chargers jumped all over Na Ali'i ace Randy Castillo, who allowed six hits, six walks and seven runs in three-plus innings.

"He was wild from the start, so we came in basically taking," said Pearl City's Bryson Namba, who had three RBIs. "But if it was a good pitch, we'd hit it."

Duane Kiyota and Kurt Poentis, the top two hitters in Pearl City's lineup, each scored three runs. Terry Ryan belted a two-run homer in the sixth.

"They hit the ball today and I was pleased with that," said Pearl City coach Gary Nakamoto. "A lot of times, they had two strikes on them and they just put the ball in play."

Poentis and Bryson Nakamura each walked three times. Five of the players who walked came around to score for Pearl City.

The Chargers also benefitted from five wild pitches, and Kiyota had three of their four stolen bases.

Pearl City, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, improved to 9-1; 'Aiea is tied for second with Campbell at 6-4.

The Chargers put the game away with a five-run fourth — on four hits and two walks — which made it 9-0.

"They're a good-hitting ball club. That's a complete team right there," said 'Aiea coach Ryan Kato.

Nakamura, a senior left-hander, was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst. He scattered 10 hits with three walks and two strikeouts in a complete-game performance.

"My game plan is to go out there and throw strikes," Nakamura said. "Let them hit the ball and they hit the ball right at the defenders."

He threw only 41 pitches in holding 'Aiea scoreless over the first four innings.

Nakamura didn't mind the long breaks between innings as Castillo threw 101 pitches in his brief outing.

"It doesn't matter how long I rest," Nakamura said. "Besides, if I'm waiting long, that means we're scoring runs, so that's good."

Nakamura had a chance to end the game by mercy rule after five innings with Pearl City holding an 11-0 lead. But 'Aiea's Keenan Naeole hit a two-out, two-run single to extend the game.

Ryan's homer off the gym in the sixth extended the Chargers' lead to 13-2 and put the mercy rule back into effect. But Na Ali'i extended the game to a regulation seven innings with a pair of unearned runs.

"The push they made at the end reaffirms my belief in the team," Kato said.

'Aiea's Castillo, one of the top pitching prospects in the state, was coming off an injury to his left (non-throwing) shoulder earlier in the season and last week he was sick. He threw two innings of relief Tuesday against Campbell.

"He said he was ready," Kato said. "If you talk to him, he won't make any excuses. He just didn't have it today."
