Heart attack killed Kona crash victim

Advertiser Staff

An autopsy Friday determined that Robert B. "Ben" Tsukazaki of Hilo died of a heart attack and not from injuries suffered in a one-vehicle crash Thursday on the Big Island's Mamalahoa Highway near Pu'uanahulu in North Kona.

Tsukazaki, 60, was a prominent Hilo land-use attorney.

As a result of the autopsy findings, the Big Island's traffic fatality count was reduced from 12 to 11, police said.

As of today, 33 people have died in traffic accidents this year in Hawai'i as compared to 46 by this date in 2007.

The current 2008 island-by-island breakdown as compiled by The Advertiser:

  • BIG ISLAND (11) — Vehicle (8), motorcycle (2), pedestrian (1).

  • O'AHU (11) — Vehicle (5), pedestrian (3), motorcycle (2), moped (1).

  • MAUI (7) — Vehicle (4), includes one for Moloka'i; motorcycle (2), pedestrian (1).
