GOING VEGAS
Two North Strip projects stall

By Anthony Curtis

Las Vegas was on the receiving end of something of a one-two punch recently, as the developers of two high-profile projects warned of delays. First, in conjunction with the official opening of Trump Plaza, Donald Trump indicated that he "hasn't decided" on a start date for building the second Trump Tower, which was expected to rise next to the first on the site of the former New Frontier. Next, Elad Properties, owner of the New Frontier site, announced that its Plaza megaresort is in "go-slow" mode, meaning that the $5 billion project that was scheduled for completion in 2012 will likely be delayed. No altered timetables were divulged.

RESTAURANTS OPEN: Megaresorts may be stalling, but not new restaurants. The Palazzo's roster has expanded with the openings of Dos Caminos and Wolfgang Puck's Cut. And the burgeoning dining scene in the Town Square shopping district at the south end of the Strip has added the Yard House, Tommy Bahama Tropical Cafe, and Blue Martini.

MUSICAL DEBUT: Also at Palazzo, "Jersey Boys" has debuted. The acclaimed musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons marks the latest attempt to succeed with Broadway-style entertainment on the Strip. Seat prices vary mightily, ranging from $71 to $258.

NOT BAD: If you've ever wondered how much the big guys at the casinos make, here's a look. Steve Wynn's 2007 compensation was recently divulged as $3.2 million in salary, $7.5 million in incentives, and approximately $575,000 in other compensation — about an $11.2 million package for the guy who oversaw a 19.5 percent increase in Wynn Resorts stock.

Q. Where is the Leroy's casino?

A. Leroy's is a sports book chain that operates out of several casinos. You may have seen ads for its 30th anniversary last week.

What began as a small alternative operation now has dozens of locations throughout Nevada, including a shiny new master book at the Riviera in the section that used to house the Nickel Town casino.
