Florida's national championship trophy destroyed

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida's football team last week suffered an accident with its BCS championship trophy from the 2006 national title. University officials confirmed that the $8,000 trophy was knocked off its pedestal and destroyed.

It may remain a mystery who actually destroyed the crystal football, which shattered after hitting the ground outside of head coach Urban Meyer's office. Florida has already contacted the company in Kentucky that makes the trophy for a replacement.

Florida associate athletic director Chip Howard confirmed the accident. The trophy was sitting on a coffee table outside of Meyer's office, which has been moved while construction of new coaches' offices is being completed.

The school had promised fans a chance to have photos taken with the BCS trophy on Saturday at the Orange and Blue game so a second trophy was used for that event.

Howard said the school had insurance for the shattered trophy and it will be replaced within 90 days.

"That's why," he said, "we have two."
