UH coed sailing team earns berth in national semifinal

The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team qualified for the national semifinals yesterday by finishing third at the Pacific Coast Sailing Coed Dinghy Championship in Long Beach, Calif.

Host USC won the 11-school regatta with a low-best 75 points. Stanford (83) was second, followed by Hawai'i (95) and UC San Diego (114). All four teams advance to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Western semifinals at Long Beach on April 26 and 27.

Mike Scott, Andrew Meade, Mark Spector, William Petersen, Becky Mabardy, Pam Magasinn and Jackie McCloughlin comprised the UH crew, which competed in A and B divisions in the two-day event.


WATER POLO

UH TAKES THREE

The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team won all three of its matches yesterday at the Long Beach State-Mini Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine (18-8) wound up a seven-match road trip by defeating Sonoma State, 14-6; Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 23-4, and Pomona-Pitzer, 16-4.

Angela Turnbull and Leonie Van Der Molen each scored three goals in the victory over Sonoma State.

Van Der Molen scored a match-high four goals in the win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Turnbull, Lisa van Raalte, and Maxie Groh added two goals apiece.

In the final match of the day, Emily Cox, Van Der Molen and Kristin Swanson each scored three goals and Sarah Gralitzer held Pomona scoreless at the half and finished with 11 saves.


SOFTBALL

HPU SWEEPS CU

Courtney Kessell pitched a four-hitter and Sherise Musquiz a two-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific beat Chaminade, 7-0 and 3-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Kessell struck out one and walked one, and Ciera Cenas had two hits, including a two-run double to lead the Sea Warriors (34-5, 19-1 PacWest) in the opener. Brandi Sasaki had two hits for the Silverswords (9-30, 4-16).

Musquiz also struck out one and walked one, and Tajia Acierto batted 3 for 3 and scored two runs in the second game.


TRIATHLON

MARR, SUMMERER FASTEST

Tim Marr and Marion Summerer won the Lanikai Triathlon yesterday.

Marr finished the 500-meter swim, 10-mile bike and 3.6-mile run in 53 minutes, 19 seconds to place first overall among the men. Chad Seymour (53:38) was second and Tai Blechta (55:50) third.

Summerer completed the course in 59:02, followed by Katherine Nichols (1:00:17) and Bre Millard (1:04:57).
