HALONA
Blowhole closed as work begins on renovations

The city closed Halona Blowhole yesterday to begin a $824,000 project to renovate the popular attraction's parking lot and viewing area.

The construction is expected to conclude in time for the site to reopen in September for whale watching season. The dates were chosen after consulting with the Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Program.

The work will include:

  • Demolishing the lower lookout platform due to safety concerns, and restoring the area to a natural appearance.

  • Rebuilding the upper visitor viewing platform.

  • Adding access from the parking lot to the upper viewing area for people with disabilities.

  • Redoing the parking lot to improve pedestrian and motorist safety. Number of parking stalls will remain the same.
