WAIMEA, Kaua'i – A rented van was destroyed by fire in Waimea Monday night, but no one was injured by the fire.

According to a police report, a 51-year-old female visitor from Georgia was driving the van heading east on Kaumuali'i Highway at around 11:10 pm in the vicinity of Sacred Heart Church in Waimea.

Linda Ka'aumoana began having mechanical problems with the van so she pulled off to the side of road. She told police she could smell gas and saw smoke and flames coming from engine.

Another motorist, Raymond Duarte of Kapa'a, called 911 and stopped to help Ka'aumoana escape from the burning van. He then returned to the burning van to retrieve some of Ka'aumoana's belongings before they were destroyed by flames.

Fire, police and paramedics responded to the fire, which caused Kaumuali'i Highway to be closed for approximately 45 minutes.
