Proulx, Nahaku head DHT's 'The Producers'

Dennis Proulx will be Max Bialystock and Don Nahaku will be Leo Bloom when Diamond Head Theatre presents the Honolulu premiere of "The Producers" on May 16.

Proulx and Nahaku will portray the roles originated by Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in the 2001 Tony Award-winning musical by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, about a down-in-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant who devise a scheme to produce a humongous flop to bilk their backers out of millions of dollars. There's one bugaboo, however: the show becomes a smash hit.

John Rampage, DHT artistic director, will direct and choreograph a cast that also will include Daniel Kunkel as Franz Liebkind, Doug Scheer as Roger Debris, Twan Matthews as Carmen Ghia, Renee Noveck as Ulla, and Jim Price as Stormtrooper.

The production boasts outrageous songs such as "Springtime for Hitler" and cross-dressing, plus visually hilarious choreography including a scene including walkers.

Emmett Yoshioka is musical director.

The ensemble features Caryn Yee, Sara Yeo, Autumn Ogawa, Leslie Detor, Heather Taylor, Yvonne Yanagihara Goss, Andrea Lopes, Lisa Konove, Judy Yoshioka, Chelsey Jensen, Shea Reiner, Mariko Lyons, Denby Dung, Darah Dung, Chris Villasenor, Don Richards, Kyle Malis, Justin Hashimoto, Levi Oliveira, Myles McGee, James Kaona, Larry Whitson, Kenji Higashihama, and Friston Hookano.

Shows are at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and4 p.m. Sundays, through June 1, with 3 p.m. matinees on May 24 and 31.

Tickets are $12 to $42, with discounts for seniors 62 and older, students and active-duty military.

Reservations: 733-0274.
