UH defeats HPU in men's tennis

Dennis Lajola won at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Jeff Fitch for a doubles victory as the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team closed its regular season yesterday by handing Hawai'i Pacific its first loss, 6-1, at the UH Tennis Complex.

Lajola defeated Hendrik Bode, 6-3, 6-2, and teamed with Fitch for an 8-3 win over Nikola Petrov and Daniel Luedi for the Rainbow Warriors (5-10), who will play in the Western Athletic Conference Championship at Las Cruces, N.M., April 24 to 27.

Petrov defeated Craig Faulk, 6-2, 6-0, to score the lone point for the Sea Warriors (17-1), who are No. 10 in the ITA Division II rankings.

Elsewhere, Sophie Kobuch won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Chloe Bihag to prevail at No. 1 doubles as the UH women's team defeated Eastern Washington, 4-3, Cheney, Wash.

Kobuch beat Kasey Knox, 6-1, 6-1, and she and Bihag outlasted Knox and Amanda Mankovits, 8-6, to help the Rainbow Wahine improve to 3-16.

LAM, LAPORTE WIN

Honolulu's Chris Lam and partner Shane LaPorte won their opening round doubles match yesterday at the St. Vincent's Futures tournament in Little Rock, Ark.

Lam and LaPorte, seeded second, rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory over Greg Jones and James Ward.

In the third set super-tiebreaker, Lam and LaPorte got a late mini-break and held serve to win. They will play Americans Todd Paul and Brett Ross in the quarterfinals.

Lam opens singles play today against Bryan Wooten.

DIVING



UH'S FRIESEN SIXTH

University of Hawai'i sophomore Emma Friesen finished sixth at the Russian FINA Diving Grand Prix last weekend at the Olympic Pool in Moscow.

Friesen is competing for her home country of Canada to earn points toward qualifying for the 2008 Canadian Olympic Diving Team.

Dong Jun led China to a 1-2 finish with 347.40 points followed by Qu Lin in second at 313.80. Friesen was sixth in her senior international debut at 270.00.
