No problems yet with big south shore surf

Advertiser Staff

Despite high-surf advisories issued by the National Weather Service yesterday and again today for south-facing shores, there had been no reports of surfers needing help as of 9 a.m. today, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.

"The winds yesterday were not really conducive for surfing (along O'ahu's south shore)," Cheplic said.

In addition, the surf wasn't quite as large as had been anticipated, he said.

The unseasonal south swell, generated by a southern hemisphere storm near New Zealand, is expected to peak today.

"The winds are a little better today and all city lifeguards are on the alert," Cheplic said.
