LANIKAI — Moanalua High School junior Tadd Fujikawa fired six birdies on the front nine to surge ahead of David Ishii in today's second round of the Mid-Pacific Open.

Fujikawa, 17, shot a 6-under-par 66 and is at 10-under 134 going into tomorrow's third round at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Ishii, 52, fired a 69 and is two shots back. Defending champion Darren Summers (68-139) was third with the majority of the Professional Flight finished with the second round.

Stephanie Kono and Anna Jang, the first females to play the Open in its 50-year history, both have a shot at making the cut. Kono, a Punahou senior headed for UCLA, had a share of 22nd at 75-151. Jang, a Punahou junior, is tied for 34th at 79-156.

Tournament organizers expect some 40 pros to make it to the weekend. The final 18 pros are playing their second round this afternoon. Kono, the 2006 state high school champion, and Jang, the 2007 champ, are amateurs playing in the Pro Flight on committee exemptions.

Ishii captured his third straight Senior championship yesterday, with Leland Lindsay (73-144) second in the 36-hole tournament within a tournament. Ishii has also won three Mid-Pacific Open titles, setting the tournament record of 17-under 271 in his first victory, in 1986.

Keola Gerell (72-143) is first in the Championship (amateur) Flight. The field of 208 will be cut approximately in half for the final two rounds.
