Registration set for 2008 Junior Lifeguard Program

The City and County of Honolulu's Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division has set the registration dates and locations for its 2008 Junior Lifeguard Program.

On-line registration is not being offered this year so please take notice of the registration dates and locations listed below. One on-site registration day will be held for parents to register their children and meet the instructors. Each session will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sign up time for all locations will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ala Moana: Saturday, May 17, 2008, Quiksilver Boardriders, 1714 Kapiolani Boulevard.

Pokai Bay: Saturday, May 17, 2008, Hale Nalu Surf Shop, 85-876 Farrington Highway.

Kailua (Kalama Beach): Saturday, May 24, 2008, Kalama Beach Park, 248 North Kalaheo Avenue.

Waimanalo Beach: Saturday, May 24, 2008, Waimanalo Beach Park, 41-741 Kalanianaole Highway.

North Shore (Ehukai): Saturday, May 31, 2008, Pupukea Foodland (parking lot), 59-720 Kamehameha Highway.

Registration is open to boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 17 years old, as of June 1, 2008. Applicants must have strong swimming skills and a desire to learn about ocean safety.

The Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division of the City's Emergency Services Department is responsible for conducting the program, with additional support provided by the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association.

The five-day course will familiarize participants with basic ocean and beach safety skills and includes an introduction to ocean hazard identification and prevention, ocean and surf rescue techniques, emergency first aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training. The program emphasizes general fitness, ocean swimming, paddle boarding, and lifesaving skills. This is not a learn-to-swim program.

Dates and locations for the Summer 2008 Junior Lifeguard Program are as follows:

Session 1, June 9 -13 , Ala Moana, Kailua, Ehukai, Waimanalo, Pokai Bay.

Session 2, June 16 - 20, Ala Moana, Kailua, Ehukai, Waimanalo, Pokai Bay.

Session 3, June 23 - 27, Ala Moana, Kailua, Ehukai, Waimanalo, Pokai Bay.

Session 4, June 30 - July 3, Ala Moana, Kailua, Ehukai, Waimanalo, Pokai Bay.

Session 5, July 7 - 11, Ala Moana, Kailua, Ehukai, Waimanalo, Pokai Bay.

Session 6, July 14 - 18, Ala Moana, Kailua, Ehukai, Waimanalo, Pokai Bay.

Session 7, July 21 - 25, Ala Moana, Kailua, Ehukai, Waimanalo, Pokai Bay.
