Swim: Kitajima wins 200 breaststroke at Japan championships

Associated Press

TOKYO — Double Olympic gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima won the 200-meter breaststroke event at the Japanese national swimming championships today, earning another spot at the Beijing Olympics.

Kitajima clocked a time of 2 minutes, 8.84 seconds for his second straight 200 title at the national meet and sixth overall. "I thought I might be pushing for the world record up until about 150 meters," said Kitajima.

American Brendan Hansen holds the world mark of 2:08.50.

Kitajima, who won gold in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke at the 2004 Athens Games, had already earned an Olympic berth in the 100 on Wednesday.
