The Honolulu Fire Department and Police Department tonight evacuated approximately 20 residents on Colburn Street in Kalihi due to a gas line leak. HPD closed Colburn Street for approximately two blocks Diamond Head of Mokauea Street. There were no injuries or fire and all residents were able to return to their homes after The Gas Company repaired the line.

The leak occurred in a Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) supply line at 517 Colburn Street at approximately 4:50 p.m. The HFD sent an engine company, a hazardous materials unit, and a Battalion Chief to the scene. HFD responders isolated the scene, identified the problem, and asked the residents from three homes on Colburn Street to leave until the leak was secured. HFD HazMat responders excavated the small leaking line and plugged the hole with a wooden plug by 5:30 p.m.

The Gas Company crew applied a patch to the gas line by 6:10 p.m. Colburn Street was reopened and all residents were allowed back into their homes by 6:15 p.m.
