Roosevelt's 7-run third too much for Kalaheo

Advertiser Staff

Tiana Sugui's leadoff inside-the-park home run started a seven-run third inning for Roosevelt last night and helped the Rough Riders score 12 unanswered runs in a 12-2 victory over Kalaheo in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association softball game.

The win — shortened to 5 2/3 innings due to the 10-run rule — at Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park improved the Rough Riders to 6-5 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division. Kalaheo fell to 1-9.

The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a run-scoring fielder's choice grounder and Hi'ilei Olsen's RBI single to center. But Roosevelt starter Lianna Bajarin limited Kalaheo to only two more singles over the next four innings.

She finished with a six-hitter, striking out six and walking none.

Meanwhile, Sugui's home run — in which she sent a liner to right field that skipped under the fielder's glove and went all the way to the fence — started a seven-run third inning for the Rough Riders in which they sent 11 batters to the plate.

Roosevelt took advantage of two errors and four walks, including three straight. Kamalei Pitoy's two-run single to center was the biggest of three hits.

The Rough Riders added three runs on four hits in the fifth inning, including Charisse Tanabe's two-run double. They then scored twice in the sixth, on Lindsay Takekawa's RBI single and a bases-loaded walk, to invoke the 10-run rule.
