Olympics: Fowles, Leslie lead US women to rout of So. Korea

Associated Press

BEIJING — Sylvia Fowles and Lisa Leslie combined for 36 points and 22 rebounds for the U.S. women's team in a 92-56 victory over South Korea in the Good Luck Beijing Tournament today.

Fowles shot 9-of-12 from the field and finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds in helping the U.S. improve to 2-1 in the tournament. The former LSU All-American was drafted No. 2 overall by the Chicago Sky of the WNBA earlier this month.

Leslie had 12 rebounds, and Katie Smith and Candice Wiggins added 11 points apiece.

Sun Min Jung and Yeon Ha Beon scored 13 points apiece for South Korea (1-2).

"With Korea averaging close to 80 points a game we knew we had to come in extremely focused defensively," U.S. coach Anne Donovan said. "We set goals to try to minimize how much they scored and we were successful. I'm really pleased with our defensive effort."

The U.S. dominated inside, outscoring the Koreans 56-18 in the paint and holding a 57-18 rebounding edge. The U.S. made 52.7 percent (39-of-74) of its shots, while limiting Korea to 37.5 percent (24-of-64).

Korea was up 13-10 with 4:03 to play in the first quarter when Taj McWilliams-Franklin scored a putback on the next U.S. possession, sparking a 13-0 run that put the Americans up 23-13 at the end of the quarter.

The U.S. never again trailed, but the Koreans hit three 3-pointers to keep pace in the second quarter. The U.S. led 39-28 at the half.

South Korea managed to get within 50-42 with 14:22 remaining in the game, but that was as close as it would get. The Americans stepped up their defense and reeled off 11 unanswered points to take control of the game.

The U.S. closes preliminary play against New Zealand on Wednesday and China on Thursday.
