Lei Day will be all-day celebration at bandstand

For the first time in 30 years, there won't be a Brothers Cazimero Lei Day concert May 1 at the Waikiki Shell.

Still, a colorful and festive daytime celebration, with music by the Royal Hawaiian Band, The Makaha Sons and Kapena, will be held at Kapi'olani Park Bandstand, in the

City's expanded May Day is Lei Day observance.

A Lei Queen will prevail and a lei contest also is part of the attraction:

• 9-9:50 a.m. — Royal Hawaiian Band

• 10 a.m.-noon — Investiture for 2008 Lei Queen and Court; presentation of Guinness World Record for World's Longest Fresh Floral/Greenery Lei (about 11:15 a.m.); opening of lei exhibit

• 11:30 a.m.-noon — Music

• Noon-12:50 p.m. — The Makaha Sons

• 1-1:50 p.m. — Na Wahine O Ka Hula Mai Ka Pu'uwai

• 2-2:50 p.m. — Hula Halau Na 'Opio O Ko'olau

• 3-3:50 p.m. —Kapena

• 4-5:30 p.m. — Halau Hula 'O Hokulani

Also:

• 7:30-9 a.m. — Lei contest entries can be submitted

• 10 a.m.-3 p.m. — Ho'olaulea of Hawaiian crafts, with lei and food vendors

• 10 a.m.-noon — Lei judging

• 12:30-5:30 p.m. —Lei contest exhibition
