HPU's winning ways may not be rewarded

By Michael Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

HPU's softball and baseball teams sit atop the PacWest in their respective rankings, but neither is assured a postseason berth.

The Lady Sea Warriors clinched the PacWest title last week with a six-game sweep of Chaminade. HPU is 37-5-1 overall, 19-1 in the PacWest. Dixie State and Grand Canyon, both 13-7 in conference, square off twice this week in a season-ending series that will determine second place.

Still, the Lady Sea Warriors, weighed down by the combined 49-67 record of the rest of the conference, dropped to No. 9 in the latest NCAA West Region poll. Only the top eight teams advance to regional play.

Meanwhile, the HPU baseball team (26-15-1) is enjoying its best season in 15 years, yet is also likely to miss out on the postseason. The Sea Warriors are ranked No. 9 in the region, with only the top six teams advancing to regional play.

Baseball becomes an official conference sport next season, with HPU, UH-Hilo (moving from Division I to Division II), Dixie State and Grand Canyon participating.

GOULDING SHARES LEAD

University of Hawai'i-Hilo sophomore Logan Goulding shares the individual lead and the Vulcans are third in the team standings after yesterday's first round of the PacWest Conference golf tournament.

UHH shot 309 and trails defending champion Grand Canyon by five shots. Notre Dame de Namur is second at 307. The three-day event is at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course.

Goulding, last year's Pac West Freshman of the Year, fired a 2-over-par 74 and shares first with Notre Dame's Mike Prescott and Grand Canyon's Bentley Nakasawa. Hilo's Zady Ari (76) and Jesus Valdivia (78) are also in the Top 10. Hawai'i Pacific's Adam Istvan (77) has a share of seventh and Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Derek Hall (78) is 10th.

The Seasiders (330) are fifth in the tournament, followed by HPU (332) and Chaminade (376).

WALLS HONORED

Chaminade freshman Chelsi Walls earned PacWest pitcher of the week honors after notching complete-game wins over BYUH and Hawai'i-Hilo last week.
